Paalam Project

Lady Ridgeway Hospital

The Paalam Project is a registered NGO established to provide relief and social services to those in need to improve the quality of life of the beneficiaries by engaging in social, charitable and educational services including the establishment of schools for education, children’s homes and vocational training centre’s, and by providing preventative health education and training to members of the community.

The Paalam Project recognised that there were children who had been affected by the trauma of the war and conflict in the north. This trauma included physical injuries and emotional turmoil. Many of these children were brought to the Lady Ridgeway Hospital in Colombo for treatment of injuries incurred during the conflict. During their stay in hospital we provided caring volunteers to visit such children and their care givers or family members until such time as they returned to the IDP camps or to their home villages. The volunteers assisted to meet the physical, emotional and recreational needs of the children. This project ran from March to December 2009 and was supported by the Neelan Tiruchelvam Trust.

Through the support given by NTT we were able to provide the children and their care givers  with necessary items such as water flasks, cups, spoons, sugar, tea, nestamalt, anchor milk powder, babies milk powder, towels, toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, clothing, sheets, toys, and books.  Upon Doctors requests, medical provisions of vitamins, medication, and a water bed for burns patients, colostomy bags and other medical items were given.

The support of NTT and the volunteers contributed to the quick recovery of the children from operations and treatment and made their stay in Lady Ridgeway Hospital less traumatic.
